Plant Disease - “garden Creep”

Friday, April 10th, 2009
One thing you either might have to watch out for or embrace is something I call Garden Creep.

This is the ability of certain gardens, let alone the plants in them, of slowly growing and spreading or even multiplying over time.

Any dedicated gardener can explain to you the visible symtomology of the disease. New garden growths appear almost randomly at times as new outbreaks of gardens pop up in sometimes rather unexpected corners and sections of the area.

This problem is also seen in certain plants as well. When they have managed to obtain a foot hold in an area, where the available space for them, is inadequate for their realistic size. You will find these plants spilling outwards or upwards into space they were never intended to occupy. This causes constant problems for entryways & walkways, as well as air space occupiers like power lines. These planbts then have to constantly attacked and kept back within their territory, often at great cost in time and money to their garden owner.

Lawn areas and sometimes even pathways in it’s way are encompassed and/or swallowed up. It even can escape from your area onto and around footpaths and along road verges.

It appears I reckon to be a possibly viral disease that affects both the gardens and their gardeners alike.

It means that these garden areas extend over a period into every little space they can infect and take over, sometimes far outside the originally intended boundaries of the initial garden/s.

How to Choose an Environmentally Friendly Garden Hose

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Consumers are becoming more and more aware of the affects that every day household items can have on the environment.  Let’s face it, going “green” has become hip.  Americans are increasingly looking for products that do not harm the environment.

Manufacturers are jumping on the trend towards environmentally friendly products in big way. In fact, even the standard tried and true garden hose is getting an extreme makeover these days.

So you have decided to replace that old garden hose with an eco-friendly one?  Great!  Here are few guidelines that will help you choose the right one.

Recycled Materials

A true earth friendly garden hose should be made from at least 50% recycled material, usually polyurethane or rubber, or a combination of both.  Polyurethane hoses are generally much lighter than all rubber hoses. The more recycled material the better from an environmentally friendly perspective.

Water Conservation

Water may one day be Earth’s most precious resource.  Eco-friendly hoses today use patented water restrictors that control pressure and help avoid soil erosion and puddling.  A good hose will use at least 50% less water than a traditional garden hose.

Lighter and More Flexible

Recycled polyurethane is 2-3 times lighter than all rubber hoses.  Look for a light hose that still contains a UV protective coating.  Without it, the hose could become cracked much easier after exposure to direct sunlight.

Drinking Safety

Everyone who has taken a drink for a garden hose has wondered (or at least they should!) about just what kinds of things the water picks up while traveling from the spigot to the other end of the hose before drinking.  With today’s eco-friendly hoses, this is no longer a concern.   As with other products bearing the name, “green” garden hoses use non-toxic substances and are completely safe to drink from.

Environmentally safe garden hoses come in all sizes and lengths.  So next time you go to replace your old hose, consider one that is not only easier to use, but better for the environment as well.
