Attaching a Garden Hose to a Barrel

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

I want to attach a garden hose to a plastic barrel such as a heavy duty trash can or tub.

The idea is to fill an elevated plastic tub with water and then be able to use a hose to drain the water. I would like to put a hole in the side of the tub near the bottom and attach either an outside type faucet or simply a fitting that would allow connecting a hose. If I did not use a faucet I could use a hose nozzle on the other end of the garden hose as the shut-off.

I went to a home inprovenment store, but did not find anything really suitable. I found a brass faucet with threads on the end to go thru the tub, but I could not find any suitable large nuts or washers. I picture large washers on either side of the plastic wall with a nut on the inside of the tub to pull the assemby snug. think large washers
are necessary to provide extra support since the plastic will be easy to damage.

I saw lots of PVC fittings, but I could not find the parts to make up what I need. Maybe some of those with plumbing skills could make some suggestions?

Suggestion: You fill up the large 55 gal. barrel with water from a garden hose… you then later want to drain the water out of the bottom of the barrel with a garden hose attached??? if so then you not gonna have any pressure for the water to flow out of the barrel like it did from the water supply?? is that what you want?? its just gonna be a trickle of water coming out of the barrel as there is no pressure on the barrel….

Now back to putting a faucet onto the bottom of a barrel: did you ever see a piece of pipe used to make a hand rail on some peoples front steps?   they have a piece of metal about 3 inches in diameter with a hole in the middle about the size of the pipe and the pipe is screwed into the plate and there is about 4 or 5 holes on the outside 3 inches of the plate to fix it to the ground or wall of the house??? they come in different size holes, get two that fit the faucet that you want to use and then get some gasket material but a hole for the size of the faucet and then put it on the place and hole it to the barrel and then drill holes for the mounting of the  3 inch plate onto the outside of the barrel, and use the other plate on the inside of the barrel, i would then put the gasket, probably have to make your own, go to auto parts store and guy some good gasket materials.. and then use some nuts and bolts to hold the two plated together (one on the inside and the other on the outside of the barrel. it you used the gasket material satisfactory then you have no leaks

How to Install a Hose Bib

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

If you are sick and tired of carting your garden hose around the yard, consider shortening the hose by installing additional hose bibs in convenient exterior locations around your home.  The only requirement is that you will need to tap into a water line and you will need to be able to solder copper pipe to connect the bib.

There are many options for hose bibs.  To prevent waste water from backflowing consider an anti-siphon hose bib.  There are also frost-free hose bibs available that will not freeze during winter months.

To install an additional hose bib, first drill a hole into the side of your home where the water line is located.  It’s best to use a hole saw that is the same diameter of the pipe.  Insert the hose bib shaft through the opening.  You will need to turn off the main water supply and and drain water lines.  Now attach the hose bib flange to the wall.

You will need to cut the water supply line with the two cutter and then solder the copper pipe to the threaded adapter fitting.  Now install a copper T and piping to the hose bib stub.

Connect the hose bib to the adapter with a union fitting.  Consider installing a shutoff valve here.  Now caulk around the flange to seal.  Check for leaks by turning on the water at the main valve.  Once a steady stream is established turn it off.  Now turn on the hose them to test it.
