Hose Reel

This is the second one I've bought in a few years, for both hoses I have. You won't find a more sturdy cart on the market. The best part is the reel itself, which works flawlessly. The powder coating paint over the metal frame is of high quality. The cart design has seen some minor changes, such as solid foam-filled wheels instead of the air-filled ones on my older model. The build directions have also improved. The only complaints I'd have are the fact the front wheels are not castored, so you have to raise it on two wheels to turn it at all. But I find that once it is in place where I want it, I don't need to worry so much about that. Also the handlebar is a one-screw design, which over time results in the bar loosening; rocking back and forth a bit. Overall though, very reliable and sturdy. Will last many more years than those other plastic ones you see.

Bought two. My 10 and 13 year old daughters easily assemble one with minimal assistance from me. Very high quality and far better than the plastic ones I had. It is hard to see how the more expensive upgraded model could improve on this model. Just had it for a week so I can't comment on the long term experience but I think it will hold up.

It does have a larger footprint and is tall. The height makes it easy to wheel around on the back two wheels. The four wheels makes for easy pushing forward but it could be a problem on a grade. Maybe thats why the new model has only two wheels. The hose reel looks expensive and not cheap like my plastic ones. The colors also match my furniture a lot better than the green plastic ones I had before.

The unassembled box was small and the tubular frame comes in segments. Although the frame is sturdy, there is some play at the joints. You have to move the handle back a couple of inches before the front wheels are raised off the ground.

100 feet of 5/8 inch hose easily fits with lots of flange left. I didn't try a longer hose but 150 feet would fit easily. I'm not sure of 200 feet.

After nearly 3 years, still working like new...

I bought this hose reel on Amazon in Nov of 2006. Its now Aug 2009. The reel is still working like new and I've had no issues with it. No rust, no squeels, no rough spinning, and no hose backlash due to freewheeling. It's been a great purchase and well worth the money. I've had mine sitting on our covered patio this entire time. Solid construction. If the product has a "weakeast link", from my experience it is this: the attached leader hose. My leader hose (which comes with the reel) has had multiple cracks (but no leaks) for atleast a year or so now. The cracks only appear along about a 10-inch section (the section with the most stress... the the portion where the leader hose exits the reel and then is forced to bend downwards towards your outdoor faucett.) Other that this, everything seems all and well and I have been very happy with my purchase. If I could give 4.8 stars I would, but since that is not an option, I will give them 5 stars. I've never owned or seen a better hose reel. Buy it!

Also, for those claiming the quality has fallen off in recent years, I just noticed that Rapid Reel has released a new version, model# 1043-GH and their website states the following: "NOTE: This model replaces TRITON models GH164-CT and GH168-WG. Improvements include heavier castings, less plastic, tighter joints, stronger wheel axles, better braking system, less assembly and an overall increase in component quality".
Nice unit but has loose fitting parts

This is a nice unit but I am disappointed with the loose fitting parts.
The handle is very loose and rotates about 10 to 15 degrees as you move the unit. The other chasis parts are all loose fitting and the whole unit flexes as you move it. I did expect better engineering for the price. The reel part works well and there are no leaks. Overall I would recommend the unit.
Very pleased with this purchase

This hose reel requires assembly. The only way it could have been easier is if they had included a little dude in the box to put it together for you. Instructions were crystal clear, and no mind boggling assortment of screws and stuff. There was, of course, an assortment of screws and stuff, but it was very manageable. I have the mechanical skills of a jellyfish and I actually enjoyed putting this reel together. I have not loaded it with garden hose yet, but I really look forward to using it. It seems sturdy and very thoughtfully designed. I have gone through several plastic reels that seem made to fall apart, and my first metal reel was a $60 Wal-Mart contraption that worked great until it nearly disintegrated with rust and it leaked like mad almost from the start(lasted about 2 years.) The Rapid Reel is rustproof!!! And it's cheaper than what they sell at Lowe's that looks like just a high priced version of the Wal-Mart ruster. I'll certainly update this review if there are any problems, but I don't expect any. Too many others have commented on the ease of operation.
