[...] Environmentally safe hoses come in all sizes & lengths. Next time you go to replace your old hose, consider purchasing one that is not only easier to use, but better for the environment as well. [...]

Mmm. Industry and government are quite talented at hiding dangerous and important things from consumers. I'm completely unsurprised by this.

Have you checked into exactly how much lead? Is it far more than the recommended maximum amount? Do the hoses currently being sold - if they contain lead - have warnings? I doubt that hoses now being manufactured contain lead.

I don't think the level of lead is lethal, so it doesn't bother me all that much. There should probably be a warning on the hoses, but since most people use a hose to water a garden, they'll end up consuming the lead one way or another. I've been drinking from a hose since I was little and I managed to get a PhD, so no brain damage for me. If I had kids I'd probably think differently and I'd be running around forcing people to sign a petition for banning lead in hoses, but right now, I don't care about it.
There is mercury in tuna, asbestos in the walls of most of the some old dorms in most colleges, lead in the air, growth hormones in meat and milk... And they all could cause cancer, but I have no intention to stop eating tuna or to stop breathing.

When you pick the hose up, you coil it. Each coil puts a 1/2 twist in the hose. When you dump it in the pile you take all the tension off the hose and it tends to untwist itself. This pulls the end of the hose around and causes tangles. You end up with slip knots where one coil has gotten pulled through another, and overhand knots where the end has been pulled through a coil. If you manage to pick the end of the hose up cleanly so there are no knots, there will be kinks in the hose when you pull it straight. Commercial divers, who work at the end of air hoses up to 800 feet long, pick the hose up in a figure-8 pattern so that each succeeding coil twists the opposite direction and the problem doesn't arise. A diver's tender who has not learned this trick is very unpopular.

If you take a hundred feet of fishing line and throw it into a pile I doubt if you can pick it up without it having knots in it. It all depends on how it is thrown down and picked up.

Most people were probably worried about how much lead could be in their insulation and their paint. These recent studies will probably inspire a demand for new, leadless garden hoses.

You may want to add your source... it seems that denial is the key response in these forums. Some would even deny it, even if you posted the source.

You do have to understand also, that lead, mercury, and other metals are found in numerous things that enter our body, including medicines, food(e.g. fish), and so on. The key is to keep it at a minimum.

If a study came out, and it tested the water from a hose, and also tested the water from a few different sources that are not a hose... and the study concluded that there are more metals in the 'hose water', then that would be good enough for me to never allow it in children or myself. Thank you.

Sidenote: Some people theorize that environmental toxins(which includes metals), may be the source of auto-immune diseases, autism, and many other medical conditions. Also, some are considering our genetic predispositions to certain environmental toxins... which may be why some people can handle certain things better than others.
